A Review of Transfer Films and Their Role in Ultra-Low-Wear Sliding of Polymers

چکیده
In dry sliding conditions, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites can form thin, uniform, and protective transfer films on hard, metallic counterfaces that may play a significant role in friction and wear control. Qualitative characterizations of transfer film morphology, composition, and adhesion to the counterface suggest they are all good predictors of friction and, particularly, wear performance. However, a lack of quantitative transfer film characterization methods and uncertainty regarding specific mechanisms of friction and wear control make definitive conclusions about causal relationships between transfer film and tribological properties difficult. This paper reviews the state of the art in the solid lubricant transfer film literature and highlights recent advances in quantitative characterization thereof.

Mechanisms of Formation of Polymeric Transfer Films*
When polymeric solids slide against other solids such as steel there appears to be no way to predict either the friction of the system or the wear life of the polymer from handbook data. Friction and wear vary over wide ranges when sliding speed, applied load and system temperature are varied. Neither have thermal analyses of the sliding system produced satisfying results, partly because of the...
متن کاملEffect of NiTi Addition on the Wear Resistance of YSZ Coatings
In this study, small fraction of NiTi (5 wt%) was added to Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat to improve it sliding wear resistance. The measurement of width of wear tracks after wear tests under a 15 N load for 100 m sliding distances showed that the width of wear track in NiTi-YSZ coating is shorter than that in YSZ coating which depicts the higher wear resistance of NiTi-YSZ coa...

The friction and wear performance of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) and pure poly-ether-etherketone(PEEK) polymers were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding and cacao drops lubrication. The sliding experiments were carried out on a pin-on-disc tribometer. The contact configuration used was a polymer pin on a rotating stainless steel disc. Wear tests were carried out at ro...
متن کاملFriction and wear of PTFE - a review
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an important engineering material. When rubbed or slid against a hard surface, PTFE exhibits a low coefficient of friction but a high rate of wear. These unique properties of the polymer have encouraged many mechanistic and physical examinations of the processes involved in the friction and wear of this polymer. A section of such work carried out over the past ...

Polyvinyl ester green composites were synthesized with walnut shell powder (WSP) by in-situ polymerization technique. The green composites have been evaluated for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus and hardness. Sliding wear loss, specific wear rate and coefficient of friction were investigated by using computerized pin-on–disc machine at normal applied loads of 20,...
